When Martus Mazur (Chris Sarandon), a sweet-talking con man, arrives on the station, Odo (Rene Auberjonois) arrests him for swindling an old couple. While in a holding cell, Martus meets a sickly alien who proffers him a strange gambling device moments before his death.
After his release, Martus takes the device and opens a gaming club to rival Quark's. Meanwhile, Bashir (Siddig El Fadil) and O'Brien (Colm Meaney) participates in a friendly game of racquetball that sets the tone for an unfriendly rematch. As the rivalries intensify, minor accidents occur around the station with increasing frequency. Soon, Sisko (Avery Brooks) becomes suspicious and discovers that the gambling machine is altering the laws of probability on the station - with dire results.
